As an art enthusiast living is Dar I am still learning about the ‘Art Scene’ in the city and discovering new artists everyday. Sometime its people I know and didn’t even know they were painters or sculptors. One thing I have come to see and very excited about it that the ‘Art Scene’ in Dar is growing and more artists and creatives are coming out and showcasing their talents. It is an exciting time for artists and art enthusiast.
An Artist’s profile will be introducing you to artists living in Dar and sharing their work and life with you.
Name: Veronika Rovegno, artistic name is ‘Bravebird’
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was born in Tanzania, grew up in Nairobi then lived in New York a little bit short of 15 years before returning back to Tanzania. I worked in the New York Fashion industry, Advertising sales as well as Public Relations. I’m currently a Public Relations manager at an agency.
I love meeting new people, interesting conversation, and people with positive energy. I love music and I love writing poetry, spoken word poetry…(mmh I think that’s my hobby). I also love photography; I’ve been told I have a good eye.
When did you start painting?
I always liked expressing myself artistically, sketching, and painting since when I was in elementary school, I would say around third grade although it had no direction at that time. It was something I used to do to occupy my idleness
Where does your love of art come from?
I guess I was born this way. I am a creative person; I love creating things and I love expressing myself. I feel that art sets you free in that way, it lets you be you by expressing yourself.
What inspires your work? Is there a background story to the art? and what thought processes did you go through to arrive at certain ideas or conclusions?
Well, I paint my feelings. There has to be some intense feeling going on with me, its either I am extremely happy, or extremely sad. I have found that these are the times I often get out of bed at 3 am or worse to paint. I usually pick the colors first to go with what I feel, then just start painting my feelings, I move away from the painting periodically have a look at it from different angles and just keep going until it matches my feelings or mood and finally makes sense to me, there is this thing that say stop, and that’s usually when a painting is done
Abstract is so unlimited, encaged, free spirited, like me!
I don’t like restrictions and rules when it comes to creativity. Abstract just opens my brain up, I could mix textures, combine different media in the painting, I could mix expressional stuff and fantasies. Abstract art has endless possibilities and that is exciting!
What materials do you use when creating your paintings?
I use pretty much anything that can create amazing textures. With the paints I use a mix of oil, pastel, charcoal and acrylic. For creating different textures on the paintings I use anything from toothbrushes, to sponges and sticks, pretty much any material that can give my pieces life.
Do you plan to put up an Exhibition of your work?
Yes, definitely. An exhibition is in the works, very soon…I just have to finish 25 paintings first. I am sort of having a good problem I should say, people keep buying the paintings as soon as I show them on social media.
If one wants to purchase your pieces where can they do so?
They can just contact me, my gallery is the second floor of my house. I welcome visitors to come view my art but it is my interest to start rotating the paintings around town at different venues.
