There are many reasons as to why we get off track with our goals or routines and I call it ‘life happens’. We all have a number of commitments such as family, work, travel and much more and all these do take up our time and if we are not careful we suddenly realize that our exercise routines have gone out of the window.
The interruptions of a good workout routine can be quite frustrating especially when you intent to get back at it. For me it was commitment to my family and changes in my household that resulted into missing out a few workouts to NO work out at all.
I love the feeling of having a really good workout routine and over the past few weeks I got myself thinking of how do I get back into my workout routine? After speaking to past work out partners and my trainer (who has still not given up on me) I got a few tips and summarize them into 7 points. If you are like me and have found yourself a little off track and need a boost; here are some of my tips on how you can kick start your way back to your exercising schedule and back to your healthy self.
1. No Complications: start with something easy.
I struggled with getting back into my routine, because I found the whole process quite overwhelming. But starting with something easy like yoga at home, a walk outside or a light jog got me moving. Once you start something and start moving, the good feeling you get from a workout, will make you want to continue.
2. Make a commitment
Making a commitment to your workout routine is important. And you don’t have to get back into an hour-long work out immediately. Start out with 20min or 30minutes and you build it from there, soon you will be back to your momentum. Remember that commitment is also about scheduling. Make time for your workouts in your daily schedule. You know your schedule so find the best time for your workouts and slot it in. Like I said even 20mins is enough and is better than not doing anything at all.
3. It’s not only about the Gym
Getting back into a routine can be quite a challenging task. As I started my journey back to my routine, I started out ‘at home workout’. I use my iPad to download exercising App. My two favorites are Nike Plus Training and Daily Yoga. I use these two for those days that I can’t go to the gym. There are many other Apps that you can download its just a matter of selecting want you like and see what best suits your style and preference of workouts.
4. Mix it up, Have fun
It’s important to know that fitness and health is not all about going to the gym. There are many ways that you can mix up your workout routines by incorporating other forms of exercises that are fun and don’t feel like a workout. I personally love to dance, so Zumba for me is another great way to getting fit. Joining clubs such as jogging or cycling clubs is another fun way of getting fit. Taking up a challenge like group workouts such as Insanity or Cross-fit are fun for those who love a challenge and competition.
5. Find an exercising partner
A workout partner is a great way to increasing your motivation to exercise. Having a workout partner is good because alone you can easily opt out of a workout but with a partner you can hold each other accountable as a result making you stick to your routine. I have in the past had workout partner, my friend and colleague Kayemarie. She has been my number one workout partner and I intend to continue our workouts together, she too has fallen off the workout wagon so to speak. The only question now, is she ready?
6. Relax; remember fitness for your mind and soul too
Do remember to do something calming, something relaxing at least one day out of your workout routine, so that you can also nourish you mind and soul. I love to swim and a good Spa treatment. Being in the water and having a relaxing Spa treatment gives me a great feeling of calmness and serenity. Whatever it is that relaxes you and puts your mind at peace, GO FOR IT!
7. It’s All About You. Do it for you!
Always remember the reasons as to why to want to get fit and healthy. It’s very easy, for us women to fall into the current craze of new fitness and diet trends we encounter everyday via social media. As for me, I love to exercise because I love the feeling I get from a workout. I feel refreshed, fit, and healthy and the thing I love most about working out is that I feel full of energy and it helps me stay focused on my daily life routines.
Do it for yourself and not for anyone else, and definitely not of what others or the media say you should. Just remember consistency becomes habit and once it’s a habit it’s second nature and no longer a chore.
To all those getting back into shape, I say Happy exercising!!
